Outdoor Portrait Photography Meetup

Outdoor Portrait Photography Meetup

Sunday 30 June
Winter Park - 9am - 2 Hours
Michael Wacht
We, as photographers, are called many times to do outdoor portrait work. Studios can be expensive or may not be available, clients may want an on-location shots, or you're shooting at an outdoor event. Whatever the reason, it's good to know how to see and control outdoor natural light in order to get the best portrait photos. This class will cover outdoor lighting and some basics of working with a model/subject.

This is an advanced portrait meetup. I recommend you take the Beginners Class first to learn manual mode and composition. Also, it would be helpful to complete the Introduction to Portrait Photography meetup, too, though not required.

I consider myself an intermediate photographer, but took the beginning class because I always believe there is something new to be learned. Mike was great and provided good information. Some of it was refresher information for me, but he also provided information and recommendations that I hadn't learned before that proved to be very helpful. The location was great for the class and it really felt like I had solid one on one time with him.

This storytelling style informs his other work as an event, portrait/headshot, and travel photographer. Mike traveled in 2003 to Angola, Africa to document the postwar church, documented relief efforts after the 2004 hurricane season, and shot an outdoor wedding next to a glacier in Alaska. I had to have a couple of ankle surgeries in 2022 and couldn't walk for the better part of two years. My wife and I had a trip planned to Gatlinburg, Tennessee and I had to do all of my photography from the car window. We came across this lush forest scene. Because of the darkness caused by the canopy, I cranked the ISO up to 1000 to get enough of a shutter speed to keep the leaves from being blurred due to any wind and to keep my aperture stopped down enough to ensure a good depth of field. West Texas and the Texas Panhandle have some of the greatest sunsets in the world. Windmills helped settle this part of the country by providing life giving water for settlers and their livestock. I set up in this location, waiting for the sunset. A friend and his horse were positioned and the sky was manipulated some with Photoshop to create this photo.

Taken on Thanksgiving morning I basically just set out to get some me time in before all the hectic festivities and kept my fingers crossed hoping the sky would be interesting for a good sunrise session and it was. This photo was the last one taken in a series of shots intended for an Instagram post displaying the timeliness of a sunrise. Thanks for the consideration. Also mods delete this paragraph if necessary but I've had some people from the group reach out to me for lessons and I'd lov

This was my first attempt at astrophotography in Brisbane and was a trial shot more than anything. I went looking for an eastern facing foreground knowing that the Milky Way core would be rising at around 10pm from the east, leaving me few options where light pollution wouldn't be an issue. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too harsh at vic point. I loved the foreground and the lightning in the distance on the horizon, and the satellite creaping in was another unexpected surprise with th

Dearing the eclipse of 2017 my family and I sat in our backyard here in WA to watch the 93 totality with our eclipse glasses. With my homemade solar filter attached to my camera, I took a series of photos of the sun during the eclipse. After processing my sun photos, I was disappointed to see that the moon only showed up as a black hole and not its proper form. I am an avid shooter of Astro photography and have several photos of the moon taken from my backyard and multiple other locations. I
